Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I hire a professional to install pinestraw?
You don't have to — we deliver to plenty of people who spread it themselves. If you'd rather not, our crew spreads it to an even depth, rolls the edges and blows off the walks and drives, and you don't lift a bale.
How do you ensure the quality of your pinestraw?
It's our own straw. Our family grows the longleaf, we rake and bale it ourselves, and it goes from the farm to your yard without sitting on a lot. That's why it's clean and fresh when it gets to you.
What areas do you serve?
We serve Lexington and Columbia first, then surrounding SC communities including Irmo, West Columbia, Cayce, Chapin, Forest Acres, Elgin, Lugoff, Camden, Sumter, Orangeburg, Newberry, Aiken, and North Augusta, plus Augusta-area Georgia. Contact us to confirm scheduling for your address.
Should I remove my old pinestraw first?
We usually recommend leaving old pinestraw in place. It acts as an additional weed barrier and enriches the soil as it breaks down. We can haul off old straw and debris if you want it gone, for an additional charge.
How does a roll compare to a bale?
One roll equals two bales.
Is there a minimum or maximum order?
No. Orders run from a single home bed up to filling tractor trailers.
How do I place an order?
Any time: call or text (803) 394-0361, or use the request form.
How many bales of pine straw do I need?
That depends on how much ground you're covering, how thick you want the straw, whether it's going over bare dirt or old straw, and the size of the bales. Send us a few photos of your beds and we'll estimate it for you, whether we're delivering the straw or installing it.
Is longleaf pine straw better than slash or loblolly?
Longleaf pinestraw is the long, coppery straw that lays flat, knits together on slopes and holds its color longer than slash or loblolly. It's the only kind we sell: raked from our own stands, baled clean and delivered from our farm to you, with no short-needle slash pine mixed in.
How often should pine straw be refreshed?
That's up to you, but most customers refresh once or twice a year. Sunlight drives how fast pinestraw grays and breaks down, so beds in full sun need fresh straw more often than shady beds to keep the same color and freshness.
